MASterworks Explorations: Mercury Store

2023 Winner for Best Adaptive Reuse

This fall, MAS is celebrating design excellence in New York City with our 2023 MASterworks Awards! We have curated a selection of in person explorations and online in-conversations with this year’s honored projects.

On Tuesday, October 17th from 6:30-7:30 PM, join MAS for a visit to the Mercury Store, 2023 MASterworks winner for Best Adaptive Reuse. Team members from CO Adaptive Architecture, the design team behind the project, and folks from the Mercury Store will lead attendees around the industrial building, which now operates as a start-up space for theatre artists, fostering collaboration, creativity, and community in Gowanus.

The building was constructed in 1902 and its original purpose was as a metal foundry. Brooklyn-based firm CO Adaptive Architecture transformed the old foundry into a more open, expansive space that includes rooms of various sizes — some fit for rehearsal, others for performance, and some rooms that can be subdivided and change size depending on the needs of the artists. The Mercury Store is bringing new life and light to this historic structure. Read more about the space here.
